Italy officially recognizes the existence of the Venetan People and its legal status since 1971 by passing the law n.340, the 22nd May 1971: this gave law force to the present Venetan Fundamental Law which explicitly speaks of «Popolo Veneto».
Italy also recognizes the right of minority languages to be defended in its Constitution.
However, by calling Venetan a "dialect" instead of a language, these laws can be overridden so that this language has never been recognized.
On March 28, 2007 an internal law of the Regional Council of Vèneto officially recognized the Venetan language within the territory of Veneto.
Yet, the lack of a unified orthography prevents the Venetan language from being accepted and officially used in the written form, since it remains essentially a spoken language.
Most of Veneti, when writing in venetan, just reproduce their local variety of this language so that opposers of official recognition can easily say that "The venetan language doesn't exist nor can be used, but a lot of venetan dialects exist and therefore there is not a standard venetan language to recognize by law"
So, differently from other minority languages as Gaelic, Catalan, Basque which through their standardization have also gained more protection, for most people Venetan is still not considered a language that protection laws can be applied to, but it still called a dialect despite its official acknowledgement.

Some features, namely those related to "zs/zx", are intended to be provisional while waiting for Veneti to leave aside their local divisions and find an agreement.

A ogni modo, la mancanzsa de na ortografìa normalixà la rende pi difìzsile l'acetazsion e l'uxo scrito uficiale de la léngua vèneta, visto che la resta specialmente na léngua parlà.
Gran parte dei Vèneti, quando che i scrive in vèneto, la riproduxe sol che la só variante locale e cusita quii contrari a un riconosiménto uficiale i pol fazsilmente sostegner che "La lingua veneta non esiste né può essere utilizzata, ma al suo posto esistono molti dialetti veneti e di conseguenza non c'è una lingua veneta da riconoscere per legge"
